This Showcase, which is designed to help students empower themselves and others, as well as decrease mental health stigma by exhibiting visual artwork created by UCI students, adhering to this year’s theme of COMMUNITY.
The Counseling Center accepted all art submissions within the specified guidelines. Mind Your Zot!

Ink Illustration
This piece is ink on bristol board, and inked entirely by hand (the background was not originally black). The concept behind the piece is being connected both to people, and the world around you. The two figures in the piece are connected via the tree in the middle, to which they all share one heart. I tried to capture a feeling of peacefulness, and to convey a theme of belonging.

Collage
It shows a representation of tired me listening to a scrawled collection of prerecorded messages I would hear often when calling for appointments, especially during COVID. I’m wrapped in a cast made of scantrons to represent feeling like I’m just a number on the waiting list instead of a human being. My features are distorted and cartoony. However, the raised part of the scantrons shows that there is more underneath. There’s also messages that are important to me and represent who I am written on the scantrons. The piece represents community for me because of the duality of feeling frustrated at long phone calls waits but the joy I shared connecting with others over the phone.

Our happiest moments are when we’re surrounded by others because community defines us. For me, animals have always been my community. I think they provide a special type of comfort.

International Coffee Hour Community Mural
International Coffee Hour Community
Drawing
Every Friday, UCI community gathers in the Science Library Terrace at the International Coffee Hour. The theme for May 5th International Coffee Hour was exploring California and the community drew what they love about California in the murals. The murals represents the essence of California and the positive aspects of living in the Golden State.
The Community Garden

Mixed Media
Like vegetables growing together, this piece illustrates what it means to be part of a community: helping others thrive and grow together with love and support. The depicted figures, dressed as various vegetables, represent a community garden where members are able to harvest crops to sustain the mouths of many more friends and families.

Painting
It’s a drawing that shows a heart in the middle and hands around it trying to reach out to it. It has a constellation vibe and it symbolize how people around someone can reach out to help emotionally someone.
Dusk, The First Bat
Shade Kirjava
Stained Glass
Dusk, The First Bat is a stained glass piece. It reflects on the early evolution of bats, one of the most unique mammals to have ever evolved. The change from a proto-bat species to a true bat included a profound change in lifestyle that permitted bats to become one of the most diverse mammal groups around today. Change can be scary but the inspirational story of the evolution of bats shows that change can open the door to new, exciting possibilities.
Generational Healing

Computer Generated Imagery
Poem inspired by battling depression/suicide over the years. A desire to connect with my ancestors through the pain and understand why it was passed on for so many generations. As well as offer them and myself healing through a lifelong journey of self-discovery, acceptance, love, and compassion.
